Brownilympics began in Simi Valley, California, in 1984 under the leadership of a small group of parents that wanted to create a new event for that area's girl scouts, specifically the Brownies. Having the philosophy that sports can enhance a young person's self-worth, and the fact that the Olypmics were coming to Los Angeles that year, it would be fun to create an Olympic style sports day for the girls. That year 23 troops, and 245 girls, and a countless number of mothers and fathers began Brownilympics. I was a huge success. Every girl went home with a medal, recognizing her as a special individual. Since that first event in Simi Valley, Brownilympics has grown to three other areas of the Girl Scouts of Tres Condados Council. In 2001, Simi Valley conducted it's 17th Brownilypmics, while Conego Valley had their 7th. Moorpark and Coastal had their 4th events each. Since 1984 over 12,000 girls have received Gold Medals through their participation in Brownilympics.
